Summary

Introduction:
This text presents a study on the effects of exposure to vapor from electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) on young adults. The study compares whole salivary cotinine and interleukin 1-β (IL-1β) levels in individuals who are involuntarily exposed to ENDS vapor (test group) and those who are not exposed (control group). The study aims to assess the potential health risks associated with exposure to ENDS vapor.

Key Points:

* The study included 48 participants, divided into a test group (n=24) and a control group (n=24).
* The test group consisted of individuals who were exposed to ENDS vapor for at least 5 minutes daily for the past 12 months, while the control group consisted of individuals who had never consumed any form of tobacco product and/or been exposed to tobacco smoke or ENDS vapor.
* Whole saliva samples were collected from all participants, and whole salivary flow rate, cotinine, and IL-1β levels were measured.
* The results showed that whole salivary cotinine and IL-1β levels were significantly higher in the test group compared to the control group.
* Whole salivary cotinine and IL-1β levels were also significantly correlated with the duration and frequency of ENDS vapor exposure.
* The study suggests that long-term exposure to ENDS vapor may potentially predispose vulnerable populations to oral and systemic inflammatory diseases.

Main Message:
The study highlights the potential health risks associated with involuntary exposure to ENDS vapor. The significantly higher whole salivary cotinine and IL-1β levels in the test group suggest that exposure to ENDS vapor may have similar health effects as traditional tobacco smoke. Therefore, regulations and public awareness efforts are needed to minimize exposure to ENDS vapor, especially for vulnerable populations.
