Introduction:
This text summarizes a research study examining the relationship between vaping and polysubstance use among emerging adults. The study used an online survey to collect data from regular vapers and analyzed the factors associated with co-use of nicotine and cannabis. The key points of the study provide insight into the demographics, personality traits, and cognitive factors that contribute to polysubstance vaping.
Key Points:
* The study targeted regular vapers between the ages of 18 and 30.
* Regular vapers were defined as those who vaped cannabis and/or nicotine at least once a week for three months before the data collection.
* Co-users of nicotine and cannabis were specified as those who vaped both substances regularly, while single substance users of cannabis or nicotine were identified as those who vaped either cannabis or nicotine regularly.
* The study used a hierarchical binary logistic regression model to predict membership in a polysubstance or single substance vaping group.
* Demographics, personality risk factors, depression and anxiety symptoms were included as predictors in block 1, while attitudes, expectancies, and perceived norms of vaping were added in block 2.
* The study found that attitudes, expectancies, and norms predicted polysubstance use over and above the effect of demographics, personality risk factors, and anxiety and depression symptoms.
* Positive expectancies played a uniquely significant role in the prediction of polysubstance vaping.
Main Message:
The study highlights the importance of cognitive factors in predicting polysubstance vaping among emerging adults. Attitudes, expectancies, and norms concerning vaping are significant predictors of co-use of nicotine and cannabis, even after controlling for demographic and personality factors. These cognitive factors may be modifiable through interventions, suggesting that prevention and treatment programs should focus on changing positive expectancies related to vaping. This could help reduce the risk of polysubstance use and its negative consequences among young vapers.
