Summary
This integrative review focuses on the physical and mental health outcomes associated with e-cigarette use in an adolescent population. The review used specific MeSh keywords related to health outcomes, e-cigarette use, and the target population. The findings indicate that e-cigarette use among adolescents can lead to various health problems, including respiratory symptoms, cardiovascular issues, and nicotine addiction. Moreover, e-cigarette use is also associated with mental health symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, and psychiatric problems. however, there is a need for more research to understand the potential pathways through which e-cigarette use and adverse mental health outcomes are related. The review also highlights gaps in the existing literature, such as the role of e-cigarette flavorings in promoting psychiatric symptoms and the potential mechanisms through which internalizing or externalizing mental health problems are associated with e-cigarette use and adverse mental health outcomes.
