Summary
The findings of the studies and workshop on e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVaLI) indicate an urgent need for:
1. a national EVaLI case registry and biorepository to aid in research and tracking of this emerging disease.
2. Physician education on screening for and documenting e-cigarette exposure, as early detection and reporting can improve patient outcomes and public health responses.
3. Continued messaging on the risks of e-cigarette use to prevent future outbreaks and instances of disease associated with e-cigarette or vaping product use.
4. Investment in research on EVaLI to better understand the pathophysiology, risk factors, and clinical course of the disease, as well as the short and long-term effects of e-cigarette use on lung health.
The studies also describe the imaging, pathologic, clinical, and physiologic findings of EVaLI, which can help in its diagnosis and management. These findings include various patterns of lung injury, such as organizing pneumonia, acute lung injury, and lipoid pneumonia.
