Summary
Introduction:
This text is a summary of a scientific study examining factors associated with past-year attempts to quit e-cigarettes (also known as electronic nicotine delivery systems or ENDS) among current users. The study aims to describe past year attempts to quit ENDS among current users and to investigate ENDS use/user characteristics associated with unsuccessful attempts to quit in the past year. The study uses data from the Population assessment of Tobacco and health (PaTh) Study Wave 4.
Key Points:
* Over 10% of ENDS users reported an attempt to quit completely in the past year.
* higher nicotine dependence, lower-frequency ENDS use, and higher interest in quitting were associated with past year attempts to quit ENDS.
* The current study adds support to claims that many ENDS users plan to quit using ENDS someday and highlights the need for continued research on ENDS cessation.
* The study used data from the Population assessment of Tobacco and health (PaTh) Study Wave 4, which is a national, longitudinal study of adults in the United States.
* The study included current, established ENDS users who reported fair regular use and use ENDS daily or some days.
* The study examined ENDS use/user characteristics, mental health symptoms, and plans and interest in quitting ENDS among current, established ENDS users at Wave 4.
* The study also examined which of these characteristics are associated with the likelihood of having made a past year ENDS quit attempt among current ENDS users.
* The study used sample weights across all analyses and replicate weights and balanced repeated replication (BRR) for variance estimation to account for the complex survey design and sampling procedures.
Main Message:
This study provides valuable insights into the factors associated with past-year attempts to quit ENDS among current users. The findings highlight the importance of understanding ENDS cessation behavior and the characteristics of ENDS users who are more likely to attempt to quit. The study also underscores the need for continued research on ENDS cessation and the development of interventions to support ENDS cessation. Overall, the study emphasizes the importance of considering the unique challenges of ENDS cessation and the need for targeted interventions to support those who are interested in quitting.
