Summary

The study found no significant differences in direction and magnitude of sympathetic reactivity after 24-hour abstinence from using nicotine products. The lack of findings may be due to methodological constraints, such as the assessment of baseline autonomic reactivity occurring approximately 45-60 minutes after participants' arrival at the laboratory. This delay may have affected the observations, as reactivity was associated with both combustible cigarette use and older age. Furthermore, the study suggests that any differential pharmacokinetic effects between product classes on sympathetic activation may be more evident during ongoing use rather than withdrawal. These findings tentatively suggest that withdrawal profiles between use groups could influence the likelihood of successful long-term cessation. however, further investigation with a larger and more representative sample is needed to confirm these observations.
