Characterization of puff topography of a prototype electronic cigarette in adult exclusive cigarette smokers and adult exclusive electronic cigarette users
Introduction:
This text discusses a study that aimed to assess the feasibility of using the SODIM Smoking Puff Analyzer Mobile (SPA/M) device to measure puff topography during the use of a prototype electronic cigarette (e-cig) in exclusive cigarette smokers (CS) and exclusive e-cigarette users (EC) in a clinical setting. The study also aimed to investigate potential differences in product use between experienced e-cigarette users compared to cigarette smokers who had not tried e-cigs.
Key Points:
* The SPA/M device was validated for use with the e-cig prototype using defined puffing parameters on calibrated smoking machines.
* Twenty-three participants were enrolled, with 13 CS and 10 EC.
* Participants used the e-cig prototype for 7 hours, with cartridge weight used to determine e-liquid usage.
* CS smoked one preferred brand cigarette with the SPA/M at the end of the session.
* The SPA/M reliably recorded puff parameters throughout the study period.
* CS took longer puffs with lower flow rates and peak flow rates compared to EC.
* Experienced EC and CS appeared to use the e-cig prototype differently.
* The SPA/M could be a useful tool in assessing e-cig use behavior for regulatory purposes.
Main Message:
The study found that the SPA/M device was a reliable tool for measuring e-cigarette puff topography in a clinical setting. The study also revealed differences in puffing behavior between CS and EC, with experienced EC and CS using the e-cig prototype differently. These findings suggest that the SPA/M device could be useful for regulatory purposes in assessing e-cig use behavior. Further studies are needed to draw definitive statistical inferences regarding differences in topography parameters between e-vapor users and cigarette smokers.
