Summary

This study analyzed data from the 2011 and 2016 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) to explore the relationship between e-cigarette use and traditional cigarette smoking among U.S. students in grades 6-12. The findings indicate that, when controlling for allowance, age, race, and e-cigarette use, there is no significant difference in traditional cigarette smoking between males and females. However, the study has limited generalizability to the entire U.S. adolescent population due to the specific sample used. Additionally, there may be some self-reporting bias in the measurement of socioeconomic status. The study's results are organized by research questions and presented in tables and summaries in the conclusion of the chapter. The data collection process began after receiving IRB approval and used archived NYTS data from 2011 to 2016, which may underestimate the actual smoking prevalence in the entire student population.
